Department of Mechanical Engineering

"Mechanical Engineering" is the practical application of the physical principles of mechanics. The science of mechanics deals with the study of the motion of objects and the forces acting upon them, based on the fundamental concepts of physics and its main tool, mathematics. It is generally studied in three domains: classical (Newtonian) mechanics, quantum mechanics, and relativity. In practice, Mechanical Engineering provides a platform to implement the physical principles of mechanics and applying them to modern industry, considering theoretical, practical, and economic aspects, with a primary focus on classical mechanics.
Mechanical Engineering covers a broad spectrum of topics and encompasses the sciences and techniques related to the generation, conversion, and utilization of energy, the creation and transformation of motion and work, the production and manufacturing of parts and machinery, the application of various materials in machine construction, as well as the design and control of mechanical, thermal, and fluid systems. This field is also widely applicable in other branches of engineering. For example, in Electrical Engineering, turbines—designed and analyzed by mechanical engineers—generate the electricity for power plants.
Significant achievements and contributions of this discipline include various technical calculations and analyses, different types of modeling and both software and experimental simulations, design and drafting of manufacturing drawings, development of manufacturing methods and standards, and the production and testing of all types of machinery, structures, and more.
This field is suitable for individuals interested in physics and mathematics who also possess strong intelligence and spatial visualization skills. More specifically, a mechanical engineer should be interested in topics such as force calculations, torque, deformation, energy, velocity, acceleration, temperature, heat, and related subjects to be able to apply them in the design and manufacture of machinery and relevant components.
Mechanical engineers play a vital role in the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of a wide range of equipment, including household appliances, medical devices, mechanical equipment for power plants, water transmission and treatment systems, mechanical and control systems for refineries and chemical plants, building heating and cooling facilities, elevators, transportation systems, diverse concentration and recycling machinery, and more. They are also involved in the design and construction of mechanical arms and production systems, as well as defense equipment such as tanks, missiles, drones, submarines, torpedoes, and mobile bridges.
Beyond technical knowledge, due to the nature of work in Mechanical Engineering, individuals should also possess a sense of responsibility, risk-taking ability, crisis management skills, and a spirit of teamwork. For instance, a mechanical engineer in an installation company designing a heat exchanger must be proficient in fluid mechanics and heat transfer principles, software simulation of the exchanger, familiarity with relevant codes and standards, knowledge of solid mechanics theories for pressure vessels and related analyses, modeling and drafting for manufacturing, as well as awareness of production constraints and factory or local standards. Such individuals must also have the confidence and risk-taking ability to lead a project from the idea stage through to construction and implementation.
