Industrial Engineering is a profession that seeks to improve the efficiency of production and service systems by integrating engineering knowledge, mathematics, economics, and management. Overall, Industrial Engineering focuses on the effectiveness, efficiency, adaptability, responsiveness, quality, continuous improvement of goods and services, and profitability. The field originated during the Industrial Revolution and gradually evolved over time. The first School of Industrial Engineering was established in 1908 at Pennsylvania State University, USA. In the 1930s, due to the Great Depression and during World War II, significant attention was directed towards industrial engineering. From the 1950s to the 1980s, in addition to emphasizing quantitative and computational tools, concepts such as Quality of Working Life (QWL), Total Quality Management (TQM), and Total Employee Involvement (IEI) became prevalent in organizations. Since the 1980s, the overall needs of organizations, business strengthening, increased competitiveness, efficiency improvement, customer orientation, marketing, and supply chain management have gained great importance.
Ardakan University was established in 2009, and the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Industrial Engineering started admitting undergraduate students in 2012. Subsequently, with the approval of the Supreme Council for the Expansion of Higher Education in 2023, the Master’s program in Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Production and Service Systems was added to the department. Currently, the department has 5 faculty members.
